Music

LEH has a fizzing Music Department with a myriad of orchestras, ensembles, choirs, jazz bands, chamber music and rock bands. Its top choir, The Holles Singers is a regular finalist in the Choir of the Year Competition and has toured Venice and New York. The weekly music rehearsals culminate in dazzling concerts throughout the year. The groups are designed to inspire musicians from absolute beginners right up to the post-diploma whizzes and produce uproariously brilliant performances.

At lunchtimes, our numerous practice rooms in the purpose-built music department are full to bursting with instrumentalists and singers, keen to hone their performances for the next concert or simply blow off some steam. Our pianists can play on our Steinway Concert Grand and we use our state-of-the-art Recording Studio to record our musicians for posterity. From Bach to Shostakovich, from Orfeo to Wicked, there’s never a dull moment in the Music Department!

Music is strong...These girls clearly love performing, but there's not a hint of showing off.

Winter Concert 2023

#lehmusicliveson

From March 2020, as you know, all over the country and indeed the world, concert halls closed, theatres went dark and school and university music departments shut down live music. It was a devastating time for the arts, but out of the adversity came the sort of stubborn determination and occasional belligerence associated with musicians and artists.

Constrained by year bubbles and often thwarted by technology, our LEH musicians went online. We initially released three virtual choir performances recorded at homes across central and greater London. Once we were back in school, we managed to produce a full year of magnificent music, all recorded in bubbles and released on the concert date through You Tube. It has been wonderful to return to our fabulous programme of concerts in-person over the last 18 months and use the technology and experience we gained in lockdown to record and showcase these amazing performances so they can enjoyed over and over again.
