LEH’s annual Sports Day, hosted on 21st June was a sea of colour and House Spirit as the girls competed in tennis, athletics, and for the first time, cricket. With the glorious sun shine warming the pitches, it was an exciting morning of events with cheers to be heard all across Hampton as girls scored excellent aces, made superb catches and scored runs and wickets. The results varied across the year groups, with different houses coming out on top.

Following a busy morning, the house cheerleading competition took place. It was a success as usual, the LVI leading the thirds to create and a develop a routine using formations, synchronisations, and a memorable chant. Taking the trophy for the third year in a row was Tyrconnel! Well done to them and to all the houses who made judging the competition so difficult!

A powerful Tug of War competition came after the cheerleading, with teams showcasing a superb bout of strength and teamwork. The teams were made up of two girls from each year group. Each house fought fearlessly, their pulls being supported by roars of support from their houses. Following a Round-Robin and the top two teams going through to the final, it was Tyrconnel who took the victory!

Following a brief lunchbreak, it was time for the athletics events. With help from many staff and sixth formers, the track and field events ran smoothly. The sun continued to shine with winds to keep us cool, as the III’s and LIV competed in track first, and UIV & LV participated in their field events. Daya (LIVL) in Holles successfully broke the 1500m record by 0.19 of a second, racing it in 5.16.74! Congratulations Daya.

Once this was complete, the year groups swapped over, with the UIV & LV competing on the track, and the III’s & LIV competing in field events. Ella (LVP) raced superbly in the 800m with a time of 2.18.31, beating the previous record by nearly 7 seconds! The LVI track events followed where another record was broken, this time by Isobel (LVIG) in Fitzwilliam competing in the 200m with a time of 30.56, beating last year’s record by 0.01 of second! Congratulations to Ella and Isobel!

The ‘Fun Relay’ was the penultimate Sports Day Event, where eight sixth formers competed in an 8x50m relay with skipping ropes, egg and spoons, and hula hoops, ending with a space hopper dash to the finish line! It was extremely entertaining, enjoyed by all the spectators, and of course, the girls running the race.

The final event of the day was the LVI vs Staff House Relay. A tense and exciting race, the house staff teams made up of staff from a range of departments traded their usual attire for sports trainers, and lined up on the track alongside the LVI. With the support of the crowds from the side-line, it was the Fitzwilliam House Staff team who raced across the finish line first, followed closely by the Fitzwilliam LVI team.

The final result will be announced in the end-of-term assembly, where all of the trophies for the respective events will be awarded. A huge well done to all the girls involved in the competition and events across the day, and thank you to all the staff involved in making Sports Day 2019 another brilliant success!
