Amber (LVIK) displayed her research poster as part of the Institute for Research in Schools (IRIS) Conference at the People’s Palace, Queen Mary University London. IRIS makes cutting edge research projects open to school students and their teachers so that they can experience the excitement and challenge of science. LEH is a IRIS Partner School. Projects are available across the sciences, although Amber used the [email protected] radiation detector to investigate background radiation produced by air borne ions.

The event started with an introduction by Professor Becky Parker MBE (pictured). After a physics degree and research at the University of Chicago, Becky taught in a variety of schools and was Senior Lecturer in physics at the University of Kent. Becky received an Honorary Fellowship of the Institute of Physics in 2014 and is Visiting Professor, School of Physics and Astronomy, Queen Mary University of London. Becky founded IRIS in early 2016 and then in the summer was awarded the Kavli Education Medal from the Royal Society. From September 2019, Becky will be Head of Physics at Benenden School, but she continues to be part of IRIS’ work as Founder.

The Conference then continued with a lecture by Professor Michael Campbell, of CERN on the Medipix and Timepix chips. He discussed their applications in medicine, analysis of art, and the manned exploration of space. The poster exhibition in the Octogon was followed by lunch, during which Amber shared her research experience in the Student Focus Group. Will Furnell – the developer of the Timepix Analysis Platform at School (TAPAS) – then made a short speech, before the school research groups presented their work and took questions from the audience.  Professor Emma Morris, MB BChir, MA, PhD, MRCP, FRCPath, of the Royal Free and UCLH closed the event by giving us all the benefit of her tremendous scientific understanding. Overall, this was a wonderful event and a great opportunity for LEH to show what our girls can achieve.
