On 8th March, the Junior School were captivated by talk of adventure and exploration in Antarctica. Starting Science Week with a bang, our visiting speaker Sandy Hennis regaled the girls with stories from the British Army’s Ice Maiden expedition. The Ice Maiden team, which Sandy was a part of, are the first and only (so far!) all female team to cross the Antarctic. The team contained the youngest ever lady to complete the challenge. Human physiology and the practicalities of spending months on the ice were covered, as well as how essential team work and mental resilience are and how they allowed the team to reach their goal. Important skills that are also very applicable in the classroom and on the sports field! UI also had the chance to take part in a workshop with our speaker Sandy Hennis.

I enjoyed finding out about their determination and how they dealt with difficult challenges.’ Manojña (UIM)

The talk was inspiring. It was fascinating to find out about how they travelled, carrying all of their equipment and tents behind them, ready to stop and set up home wherever they went.’ Savannah, Mishra and Ruby (LIIE)
