Huge congratulations to creatives and cast who took part in ...the girl writes Showcase in the Drama Studio on Wednesday 28th September with a small, intimate audience of supportive students, teachers, parents and our esteemed adjudicator, Freddie Machin.  The audience was treated to a real celebration of new comedic writing with two extracts entitled: ‘The Lawrence-Cromwell Case’ by Mariya Ali and ‘Writing a Song but There’s a Demon in Your House’ by Nivedha Prabhu.  The cast brought joyous verve and enthusiasm to their roles and there was a wonderfully positive energy to the whole event, which is the culmination of a year’s worth of writing ideas, workshops and rehearsals.

Freddie Machin, an actor, playwright and creative writing teacher, has been involved with the project since the beginning of the Write the Girl initiative, which began in 2018 and he commented: “I wanted to say again how much I enjoyed coming to see both of the plays on Wednesday afternoon. Having met a number of students at LEH over the years, I know how high the standard of drama is at the school, and I was extremely impressed by what was presented.  It takes a huge amount of focus and energy to write a piece of theatre, and it also takes a lot of courage to share it with an audience, so I hope the students left the building glowing with a sense of pride and a huge sense of achievement. Well done to all.  Both of the pieces are full of brilliant wit, and humour, with a clear passion for great characters. I would advise the students to continue to pour themselves into their work and bring their unique imagination to the stage. We need the students to keep writing.  This world will be much poorer if they stop, so keep going. Keep the creative fires burning, keep being brave, and articulate, and funny, and weird and great. See you at the Oscars!”

LEH Drama and English Departments are very excited to see where these two fantastic pieces of work may lead to next, so watch this space and congratulations again playwrights, cast and crew!
