Star Print's Young Artist Competition Winner

I was really surprised and delighted to win the Star Print’s Young Artist Competition over the summer. My piece was from work I had undertaken for my GCSE Art coursework and was inspired by Derain’s ‘Charing Cross Bridge.’ I have always loved Richmond Bridge as I live nearby and it is the oldest bridge crossing the Thames in London.  I really enjoyed exploring the view through collage as I could explore many different colours and textures.  Having taken initial photos, I did some texture and tonal studies prior to using Photoshop, which allowed me to experiment further with colour.  Before putting the collage together, I had to create all the papers and ensure that there was a balance in tone to the piece.  I think my favourite part is the bridge because the corrugated cardboard used to make it, alongside the watercolour shading, gives lots of texture and depth to the piece, as well as making it the main focus of the piece.

The prize I received from Star Print was very generous and included a very useful table easel with paints and palette knives as well as a gift voucher to spend there - these will help with my future art projects and has really inspired me to pursue A level Art.
