Opening our eyes to Clay Portraits

Over the last fortnight, the Lower Sixth have been lucky enough to partake in a clay workshop run by Kate Brett, a ceramics artist with degrees in both 3D Design and Fine Art, learning valuable skills which we can take forward into our A levels. Clay was a medium most of us had little experience with, and I know many of us felt apprehensive when facing the huge lump of clay in front of us that was supposed to become a head. Guided by Kate’s expertise, and joined by our life-model, we learned how to shape facial features and build up the face, using what we observed in front of us in order to create the correct proportions and incorporate a humanistic feel. It was an invaluable experience, and opened our eyes to a new medium which I know many of us are keen to explore further.
