Huge congratulations to our four shortlisted Lower 6 Art Historians, who each took home a prize at this year's prestigious Spoke Art Documentary Competition Awards Ceremony! Their creativity, dedication, and insightful inquiry into the world of art have truly set them apart.
Saffron W was awarded second place in the 15-16 age category for her energetic and captivating visual montage celebrating the vibrant works of Pauline Boty. Saffron's film stood out for its dynamic portrayal of Boty's unique contributions to the art world.
Bria S, who won first place in the same age category with her thought-provoking film on Chris Ofili's No Woman No Cry, was also commended for her poignant tribute to Stephen Lawrence. Bria's film delivered a powerful message about the lasting impact of art, with its insistent reminder that "the power of art is its refusal to let grief override memory."
In the 17-18 age category, Daisy G earned third place for her thoughtful and sensitive treatment of the complex story of Richard Dadd. Daisy's film was praised for its nuanced exploration of Dadd’s troubled life and artistic journey.
Flora M, who secured second place in the same category, was celebrated for her fascinating dive into the controversial depiction of Myra by Marcus Harvey. Flora’s documentary raised important questions about the ethics of representing figures like Myra Hindley in contemporary art.
We are incredibly proud of all of our students for combining music, moving images, and insightful critical inquiry to produce such compelling and sensitive films. Their work reflects not only their deep understanding of art history but also their ability to engage with and communicate complex social issues through the power of visual storytelling.
Congratulations once again to Saffron, Bria, Daisy, and Flora!
