On 7th February, the English Department was delighted to host Dr Daniel Swift, Senior Lecturer in English at New College of the Humanities, for a Literary Lecture on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Focusing on the opening of the tragedy, Dr Swift explored the nuances of Shakespeare’s craft in establishing the scene. He also considered Hamlet in light of the openings to other Shakespeare plays studied by our girls, including Richard III and Measure for Measure and posited that genre is not necessarily a rigidly defined concept in Shakespeare’s plays. Dr Swift engaged the girls in close textual analysis and emphasised notions of uncertainty and experimentation on Shakespeare’s part in how he opened his plays – particularly interesting in terms of the trajectory of Shakespeare’s craft as a playwright.
