World Maths Day
World Maths Day, a global event designed to unite “the world in numbers” was celebrated on Wednesday, 3rd March. Laura McKellar and Georgia Richard, (Upper Fifth) give an account of the day.
As part of the activities, 572, 753 084 correct questions were answered on an online maths game designed by the organisers. Thirds and Lower Fourth pupils took part in an online mental arithmetic competition with other pupils from around the world, while the Upper Fourth tackled ‘Knights and Knaves', a logical thinking challenge to distinguish knaves, who lie, from knights, who tell the truth.
In Upper Fifth we played a maths game to celebrate this day in our lessons: we used our logic and our mental arithmetic skills to find the cheapest venue to host a party. It offered a welcome change from our revision for our GCSEs this summer.
The Lower Fifth also got to play a game, but theirs was a bit longer and much faster paced than ours. The year was split into teams of two, who were then partnered with another team of two. The aim of the game was to be the fastest team to complete a stack of questions, which involved not only mathematic prowess, but a good sprint to collect the questions. The prizes were big bars of chocolate. Needless to say, for that reward, everyone wanted to compete at their best. As soon as the time started the room echoed with shrieks of excitement. Everyone had a great time, and we are already looking forward to World Maths Day next year.
