On 6th July, Laura Martin and Shivali Sood went to the Wavemakers Awards Ceremony in Leicester Square. Also, two Hampton School pupils and two of the children at the club came. The award was in recognition of Barnardo’s Saturday Club, in which volunteers from LEH and Hampton help children with disabilities. When we arrived we met John Major, the Weasley Twins, from Harry Potter, Patrick from Eastenders and Bob Holness, the presenter of the programme Blockbusters.
There were about 20 other awards presented to other clubs, organizations and individuals. We watched a song performed by children in sign language. After our award was presented we went into another small room where our picture was taken and where we were interviewed. After the award ceremony, we talked to the other award winners and the celebrities. We had a drink and ate some food, then made our way home in the minibus. Shilvali Sood, L6D
Barnardo’s Stars on Saturday Club “Four years ago it became clear that young people with learning difficulties in Hounslow were missing out on social interaction. Work between Barnardo’s and others highlighted the interest of two local schools who were keen to volunteer to change this situation and Stars on Saturday was born. Now teamed up with Hounslow Youth Service, Stars on Saturday operates as an activity club for young people with disabilities aged 10-16, run almost entirely by volunteers, including over forty youngsters. Transport is provided, to and from the club, and many different activities take place, including arts and crafts, sports and cooking. In this situation all the young people benefit – both attendees and volunteers alike”.
Why the Wavemakers judges chose it… “Whilst not a new idea, the inclusive nature of the club has obviously served to break down barriers for many sections of the community and it clearly benefits young people from all backgrounds”. |
