Active Service and Outreach Work by Pupils

Active service and outreach work includes the following:

1) Pupils involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme (c. 140 per year) undertake community service in the local area. This ranges from assistance in charity shops to working on drama projects with special needs pupils. In addition, the school provided computer facilities for Richmond Borough EDofE training.

2) The school's Service Volunteers organise up to five events for the local community each year. In 2010-11, these included a ‘Splash and Gym' day and two day trips for pupils from three local special needs schools, a Christmas Party, and a Tea Afternoon for local elderly residents.

3) Pupils run and take part in a number of weekly activities in state primary schools in the local area. This includes assisting adults, and organising or leading the delivery of enrichment extra-curricular activities. Programmes run over 2010-11 included:

BuckinghamPrimary School

  • ‘Minimus' Classics Club

Crane Park Primary School

  • Art and Craft Club

4) Pupils are engaged in activities with local state secondary schools:

Hampton Academy

  • GCSE mentoring in Maths and Science

This has received significant attention in the educational world, including from the Richmond Children and Young People's Trust, the Training and Development Agency for Schools, and ‘ContinYou', one of the UK's leading community learning organisations, features the scheme on its website (http://www.continyou.org.uk/).

TeddingtonSchool

  • GCSE mentoring in Maths, English and Science

A number of pupils from Teddington are mentored by Sixth Form pupils from LEH and Hampton School in the Spring Term.

Sixth Form pupils mentor the Year 5 girls from local state schools involved in the SHINE ‘Serious Fun on Saturdays' programme.

5) Sixth Form pupils assist with Barnardo's Activity Clubs on Saturday mornings in Hounslow run for children with special needs, and have won the following awards over the past few years:

  • Volunteers of the Year
  • The Wavemakers Award
  • The Marsh Volunteer of the Year Award

6) The school provides some 100 girls as part of the Hampton School Combined Cadet Force. This has provided a solid grounding for future recruits to the Services, in addition to playing a role within the community. Pupils from a local state school (Hampton Academy) joined the corps in September 2009.

7) Staff and pupils continued the Carnegie Reading Group founded with HCC and Hampton School in 2008-9. This involves significant pupil collaboration as well as sharing library facilities and resources.

8) The Junior Department has a strong association with the local Shooting Star Hospice. The Junior Department Choir sings regularly at the Shooting Star Christmas Fair in Kingston, which in 2009 raised over £7000; and at the Shooting Star Hospice Carol Service.

9)The Junior Department Choir sing regularly at the Hampton Hill Christmas parade, which is a charity event.
