Ritika Cherian (UIV) provides a first hand account of the Fashion Show.
On Thursday 7th February, all of the upper fourth, teachers and much needed technicians crowded into the Drama Studio. The event? The annual Geography Ethical Fashion Show, a chance for the upper fourth to showcase their latest project in an audacious show, modelling ethical, homemade clothes on the catwalk.
The atmosphere was a combination of nerves, excitement and most prominent of all, anticipation. A catwalk running down the middle of the studio was surrounded with seats of eager spectators. A microphone for members from each group to commentate stood in place. After a few introductory words from the Geography department, the show could officially begin. As soon as the lights dimmed, the studio burst into a rapture of applause and cheers as the first models made their way to the catwalk. The music blaring from the speakers, the audience fell silent to listen to the commentary.
It truly was a fashion show like no other. The main aim of the clothes displayed was to show that workers did not have to suffer to make our clothes. Another issue also very much highlighted was the ever-growing amount of waste in today’s world, a factor many groups chose to harness in order to produce their outfits. Old clothes were customised and resources ranging from newspaper to plastic bags were the main materials of choice. Each class took it in turns to walk down the catwalk, with some groups making as many as four brilliant outfits. After a few encores, the crowd again burst into a deafening roar. It was evident the show had been a tremendous success.
A lot of hard work was put into the show, and many thanks must go to all the Geography Department for organising the event, the staff that came to watch, the technicians and of course to everyone in the upper fourth for working so hard and proving that fashion can indeed be ethical.
