There are many opportunities to perform in groups reflecting in a wide range of musical styles. We have a 60-strong classical symphony orchestra. It has achieved success at national level and has performed at the Royal Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall, as well as appearing on Channel 4 television.
The senior string orchestra has also achieved success at national level. Other groups include big band, percussion group, brass group, jazz group, several rock bands and saxophone groups. There are senior, junior and chamber choirs. There are also some 40 chamber groups each receiving weekly expert coaching.

| Girls participate in a variety of groups in classroom music lessons |
There are regular formal evening concerts, chamber concerts, jazz, pop and rock concerts and an annual candlelit carol service. There are weekly informal lunchtime concerts and twice-weekly performances in Assembly. We also hold an annual three-day Music Competition with a guest adjudicator which attracts over 200 entrants from across the school.
There are regular musical activities held in conjunction with Hampton School. A fully staged musical/operatic production is staged each year with a cast and an orchestra made up of pupils from both schools. Recent performances include Bernstein’s West Side Story and Bizet’s Carmen. The Joint LEHS-Hampton Choral Society is made up of pupils, parents, staff and friends of both schools performing large-scale choral works with professional soloists. Recent works include Vivaldi and Handel settings of Dixit Dominus, Verdi’s Requiem, Haydn’s Missa in Tempore Belli and Missa Sancti Michaelis by the school’s composer-in-residence Bernard Hughes.
